Meet our New Rector, Rev. Christopher Garcia

The Vestry Elects the Rev. Christopher M. Garcia to be our next rector!

The vestry of Emmanuel Episcopal Church has elected the Rev. Christopher M. Garcia to be our next rector.  Father Christopher comes to us from Christ Church, Georgetown, in the Diocese of Washington, where he serves as Assistant to the Rector.

For twenty-five years, Father Christopher served in the U.S. Army as an intelligence officer and later as a member of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.  His career took him to Korea, Germany, several U.S. posts, and to Saudi Arabia and Iraq for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  Assignments at the Pentagon brought the Garcia family to Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Burke, Virginia, which sponsored him for ordination.

Father Christopher earned undergraduate, M.B.A, and law degrees from Cornell University.  His seminary education was at Virginia Theological Seminary, in Alexandria, Virginia.  During seminary, he served at Washington Hospital Center; Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, Purcellville; and Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church, Arlington.

Garcia family Christmas 2012Father Christopher met his wife, Cheryl, while both were in law school, and they have been married for almost 23 years.  They have two children, Elizabeth, 19, a sophomore at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, and Thomas, 18, a senior at West Springfield High School.

“A mentor suggested that I might be a good fit for Emmanuel.  I was attracted to Emmanuel by its beautiful setting:  my family and I spent four happy years in Charlottesville (Thomas was born there), and we welcomed the chance to come back to Albemarle County.  The history of Emmanuel, your pronounced sense of family, and your openness to God’s call to new missions and new ministries made this opportunity even more inviting.  I am excited about the Emmanuel of today and Emmanuel’s potential for the years ahead.  I am grateful to your search committee for their careful and caring work and to your vestry for this opportunity.”

This is exciting news for all of the parish family at Emmanuel Episcopal. We are also delighted to share that Christopher, Cheryl, Elizabeth and Thomas will be able to join us in fellowship and worship at the parish retreat this weekend at Shrine Mont.  What a great way to welcome the Garcias into our Emmanuel family!

Father Christopher expects to begin his ministry at Emmanuel in October.
