Confirmation June 9th, 2013
Sunday, June 9, 2013 was a joyful day in the life of Emmanuel Episcopal Church as Bishop Shannon Johnston, the XIII Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia, confirmed twelve youth and two adults.
The journey to confirmation began for this group in January, through a class to review the Bible, Church history, the Book of Common Prayer, the Catechism, how we worship, and some of the traditions and customs of the Episcopal Church. They started off by learning that Confirmation is the second step in becoming a member of the Family of God. In Baptism, we are "adopted" into that Family. In Confirmation we accept responsibility for the promises made in our behalf by our parents and Godparents at Baptism and try to understand what those promises mean. But we also learned that we do not "graduate" from Church at Confirmation. Instead, we now become full-fledged and responsible ministers as we mature into adulthood.
Mr. Richard Nicholas, who led the class for the youth, said, “our class was a "happy dozen" who listened and learned from others. Many friendship were made that will endure for years to come. All of us still have many questions about our Church and our faith, but hopefully we have formed a good basis from which to help answer those questions as we continue to grow.”
The Emmanuel Community continues to celebrate the newly confirmed and their commitment to their faith.
