Disciples (Soup) Kitchen Feeding Ministry
The Disciples Kitchen (http://www.discipleskitchen.org/) in Waynesboro, VA is a local soup kitchen open to individuals and families in need of a hot meal. Meals are served Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm in the Fellowship Hall of 2nd Presbyterian Church on Commerce Ave. Lunch is free to all in need. In 2011, the Kitchen began serving a hot breakfast on Saturday morning at Basic United Methodist Church on Delphine Avenue and 5th Street in Waynesboro.
Disciples Kitchen is a non-denominational ministry sponsored by more than 25 churches and organizations. Since it opened its doors in September 2007 to December 2010, the Kitchen has served almost 14,000 meals and 1,000 different people. Each lunch averages around 60 diners. About 35 people come for the Saturday morning breakfast. The goal of the program is to share what God has given us – His love and His blessings – by providing a hot, nutritious meal free-of-charge to anyone who needs it. This is in keeping with Matthew 25 where Jesus replied to the question, “When was it we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and you gave you something to drink? … Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family you did it to me.”
Emmanuel staffed the Kitchen 6 times in 2010 serving our signature chili 5 times and a festive ham biscuit and salad lunch during Christmas week. In 2011, we alternate serving lunch and breakfast each month.
