The Emmanuel-Holy Cross Bread Fund is a food distribution service for needy individuals and families living in the Albemarle County/Nelson County region. Started in 1984, the Bread Fund now serves approximately 130 families each month.
Emmanuel volunteers gather at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Batesville on the first Saturday of every month to distribute boxes of food supplied by the Blue Ridge Food Bank of Verona, VA.
On the Wednesday following the first Saturday, the “Bread Fund Packing” begins at 10am and continues until the work is done. Join us at Holy Cross in Batesville on either the first Saturday of the month, or the Wednesday following for some good, honest, outreach work that benefits our greater community.
A large truck haulsl 9,000 – 10,000 pounds of food to the church for boxing each month. The Food Bank receives some food from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. The remaining food comes from food processors in the area, such as Perdue, Little Debbie, area grocery stores and food drives conducted by civic organizations, such as the Boy Scouts. The food is distributed to qualified families on the first Saturday, and boxing for the next month is performed on the following Wednesday.
