Dear Diocesan Family,

In the spring issue of the Virginia Episcopalian magazine, you read about a new opportunity taking place in the Diocese of Virginia. Starting this Pentecost Sunday, May 27, we’re challenging you to enter into a thoughtful and intentional practice of reading the Bible – every day – to completion, in one year.

This particular program is designed by the Center for Biblical Studies. People and dioceses throughout the Episcopal Church and across the wider Anglican Communion are participating. Now, many of you might already have a Bible-reading practice. But I encourage you to take part in this diocesan-wide initiative, too, particularly in light of the brief daily reflections that will be offered by scholars and leaders representing quite varied approaches and perspectives. (I am myself providing a three-day series of reflections.) Moreover, as a large and wide-spread diocese, it can be a challenge in and of itself to find ways to come together and grow spiritually as a community. This shared practice of joining together in faithful discipline is one way to contribute to deepening our community as a diocese.

The time is ripe for such a challenge. As we look toward the horizon, we see great energy and change ahead. We have just elected a new bishop suffragan and look forward to her consecration on July 28. In early July, a deputation from your diocese will travel to Indianapolis for the triennial General Convention of the Episcopal Church, and every day here in the Diocese, men and women are hard at work on the initiative known as Dayspring, the effort to discern vision and strategy surrounding the properties that are returning to us. Grounding ourselves in Holy Scripture in this year of change and significant discernment in our diocese will be, I pray, a transformative experience for us.

We’ll provide you with suggested daily readings and reflections, as well as an online community to share your thoughts and prayers. To get started, please visit the following site:

Emmanuel’s choir will be joined by the Choirs of Christ Episcopal Church, Charlottesville and St. Paul’s, Ivy for an Ascension Day Evensong, 7 pm on Thursday, May 17. The Rev. Eric J. Liles, Rector of St. Paul’s, will officiate. There will be a reception after the service.

Women’s Bible Study meets today at 10:30!

Hello everyone,

Please attend the Women’s Bible Study on Thursday, May 3rd, at 10:30 am in the Parish Hall, where we meet to watch a DVD titled Courageous. It is a little over two hours, so the introduction and the discussion of the story and premise for The Resolution for Women will be brief. Books will be available for purchase and the reading assignment for May 17th given. We continue with alternate weeks. Kathy and I are excited to start this new study with you. Child care will be available if needed, so come early in order for me to call our child care person.

This study will be made available Thursday evenings, also on alternate weeks at 7:30 pm at Carolyn’s home, in Crozet. We hope to reach more women who may be unable to attend the day-time study. Unfortunately, child care will not be available in the evening. If you cannot make the morning session, we hope you can come in the evening. Please call if you will attend the evening session.

Congratulations to parishioner Gordon Burris, recipient of the Bus Male Service Award at UVA!

Gordon Burris, senior assistant to UVa President Teresa A. Sullivan, was the recipient of the Bus Male Service Award for his years of service to the athletics department. Burris has served the University in various capacities during his career, including tenures as the men’s soccer, tennis and golf coach. He also served as assistant dean of admission, associate director of the Alumni Association, and as assistant athletics director and director for development and major gifts for the Virginia Student Aid Foundation (now the Virginia Athletics Foundation).

As a reminder, the Emmanuel Family Fellowship was started as a way for families with children elementary aged and younger to meet each other and share some fun throughout the year.
