The Rev. Deacon Donald H. Cady

The Rev. Deacon Donald H. Cady

I was born February, 1938 in Montclair, NJ where my family lived until I was 14.  I was baptized in 1939 at the First Congregational Church, Glen Ridge, NJ.

In 1952 my family moved to Chappaqua, New York where I graduated from high school.  I graduated in 1960 from Union College, Schenectady, NY with a BS in Geology.

In 1961 I married Diane (Deede) Hartman of Shaker Heights, OH.  Deede is a graduate of Skidmore College.  Deede and I have two children, Debbie age 48 and a teacher of therapeutic horseback riding.  Our son Bob is 44 and a career naval officer.  We have three granddaughters, Ginny a freshman at Dickenson College, Maggie a freshman at St. Stephens St. Agnes and Lilly a fifth grader.

I began my 43-year career in the advertising agency business in 1960 in New York City.  Over the period of my career, Deede, our children and I have lived not only in the New York suburbs but also in Los Angeles and Washington DC area.  I retired at the end of 2002 as executive vice president/partner of Porter Novelli International.

During the three years that followed, I pursued a career in the nonprofit world as president of the Conservation Research Center Foundation, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute.  CRCF focused on the conservation of endangered animals throughout the world.

I began my formal discernment for Holy Orders as an Episcopal Vocational Deacon in 2006.  Over the next almost six years I completed four years of Education for Ministry, three years in the Diaconate Formation Institute and three years at the Episcopal Leadership Institute.  I was ordained a deacon in February, 2012.

My ministry as a deacon is to serve the needy, the sick and the infirmed. Specifically I serve our wounded war veterans at Hunter McGuire VA Hospital and at Grove House.  I also serve as a adjunct chaplain at UVa Hospital and a mentor chaplain at the UVa School of Medicine.

I am a former member of the Chapter of the Washington National Cathedral, a governor of Stuart Hall School, trustee of Centenary College and a trustee of the Clarke County Historical Association.  I currently serve on the Board of Directors of The Alban Institute.

My interests include tennis, gardening, travel, reading, my family, fly fishing and fine food and wine.  The light of my life is my wife of 50 years, Deede.
